History of Stony Plain Minor Ball

August 18, 1921 - A baseball game between Stony Plain and Comet was suspended in the third inning when all hands went on a weasel chase.

1923 - The Western Baseball Alberta League if formed with Stony Plain, Evansburg, Duffield, Wabamun.

1924 - First League Baseball game Evansburg-7  Stony Plain-3

March 30, 1927 - Intermediate Baseball League is formed – Stony Plain, Spruce Grove, Duffield, Wabamun, Winterburn, A & R Team, Laight’s Reserve.

April 12, 1967 - There was a new Baseball League called The Hi-Way 16 West Baseball League. The league consisted of Stony Plain, Spruce Grove, Wabamun and Clymont. They also formed girl’s softball.

1982 – Gord Montgomery - (Retired sports reporter for the Stony Plain Reporter) was assistant coach to the Midget baseball team. They hosted the Alberta Minor Baseball Association Provincial tournament. They won and they were off to Regina to represent Alberta in the Western Canadian Championships.

August 9, 1989 - Stony Plain Mosquito team wins bronze.

1988 & 1989 - Stony Plain Cubs Midget AAA won Provincial Midget Championships. They went on to represent Alberta in the Western Canadian Championship.

There was a mens team in Stony Plain called the Stony Plain Bartenders.

May 1993 - Stony Plain pulls the plug on the Midget AAA program.

August 1993 - Stony Plain Competition Chev Olds White Sox Mosquito AAA won bronze medal at the Alberta Provincial Mosquito AAA Championships. Head coach was Doug Jones (Parkland White Sox AAA Seniors)

July 1994 – Stony Plain Peewee AA and Mosquito AAA both qualified for Provincial Championship.

August 1994 – Stony Plain paper reports that 5 teams from Stony Plain are in Provincial Play…Baseball becoming a Big Time Sport!

1994 - 400 kids were registered to play ball… previous years were from 280-340 registered players

January 1998 - Stony Plain hopes to start a junior-aged baseball team of 19-22 year olds.

August 7, 1998 - Stony Plain Royals Peewee AAA win Alberta Provincials and are off to National Championship in PEI.

August 1999 - Midget AA Royals win Bronze in Alberta Provincials.

March 7, 2003 - Parkland Jr. White Sox move to Stony Plain - Doug Jones Coach (18-21 year olds)

February 2004 - Mosquito A2 Royals win silver in Provincial Championship.

2005 - Batting cages and new equipment shack completed.

December 2005 - Michael Kuzek – Former president of SPAMBA is honoured by Baseball Alberta with the `Wally Footz Builders Award’ for his dedication and service to the local minor baseball association.

July 2006 - Stony Plain Royals Peewee AA win gold in Alberta Provincials. Wayne Duke Head Coach

October 2006 - Wayne Duke, coach of the Stony Plain Royals Peewee, was honoured with the Tedd Rudd Minor Coach of the Year Award at the Baseball Alberta AGM.

2007 - SPAMBA gets a website.

July 2007 – Stony Plain Bantam place third in provincials.

2007 - Brandon Strocki, our local umpire was awarded with a Baseball Alberta Scholarship.

2009 - Brandon Strocki was awarded with Junior Umpire of the Year Award for all of Alberta.

July 2010 - Royals Mosquito AA went undefeated in league play and won the Provincial Silver Medal. Scott Erwin was Head Coach.

July 30, 2010 - Stony Plain Royals Midget AA win Silver at provincials. Wayne Duke was Head Coach.

August 2010 - SPAMBA gets concession donated from CN, thank you Mike Greenbank

May 2012 - Midget diamond (Arena 2) gets grass infield.

August 2012 - Stony Plain Royals Bantam AA win silver at Provincials. Wally Luberda head coach.

September 2012 - Arena 1 diamond gets warning track.

September 2012 - SPAMBA hosts their First Annual Silent Auction Dinner & Dance.

September 2012 - Stony Plain offers ‘Fall Ball’ for the midget age group! Was a huge success!

November 17, 2012 - SPAMBA’s Tyler Ulrich has been named Baseball Alberta’s “2012 Midget Competitive (AA) Player of the Year”.

February 25, 2013 - The Town of Stony Plain acknowledges the Stony Plain Royals Bantam AA team with an Achievement Recognition Award. They also recognized Tyler Ulrich with an Achievement Recognition Award for his 2012 Midget AA MVP Award.

July 19-21st 2013 - Stony Plain Royals Mosquito, Peewee and Midget AA host provincials.  Stony Plain makes history by being the first Association to host 3 divisions in the same weekend.

July 21, 2013 - Stony Plain Royals Peewee AA - Win silver at provincials in their home town.  Allen Mundt - Head Coach

September 21, 2013 - SPAMBA hosts its 2nd Annual Dinner Dance and Silent Auction.

July 27, 2014 - Stony Plain Mosquito AA win Gold at Provincials in Strathmore, AB.  Tier 4 Champions.  Jason Smith - Head Coach.   Travis Wagner got Tournament MVP.
